Jazz Scale Fingering Patterns for Plectrum Tuned Instruments

by Ed Cuneo, Banjoist

Anyone who has ever tried it, knows that playing jazz lines on a plectrum tuned instrument, i.e. C G B D, is a somewhat irrational endeavor. There is virtually no 'blocking' or 'zoning' available, such as you would have on a guitar fretboard, and the tuning leads to long linear scales. Two octaves across 4 strings will span 10 frets!

In order to assist the serious musician in learning to play jazz scales on a plectrum tuned instrument, I have prepared this first folio of basic fretboard fingering patterns. By mapping these patterns, I am providing something that has not been heretofore available and I have removed one serious impediment to jazz scale improvisation on the plectrum tuned instrument.
