DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO MISS NEW ORLEANS?
Words by Eddie De Lange
Music by Louis Alter
Arranged for plectrum banjo by Ed Cuneo
This is a song about feelings. It is better played after the words have been read and De Lange's intent understood. It can be played very effectively in it's original form while always keeping the lyrics in mind. However there are some contemporary harmonic structures which will enhance the original music and at the same time, offer outstanding improvisational opportunities. For example, try replacing the G7+5 in the second two beats of the first measure with a Db9 and then replace the second two beats in the second measure with an F9. I use a pentatonic or a locrian over the Db9 and a variation of the F blues scale over the F9. This is very rich indeed. After you have the song memorized, you can experiment with the articulation. Sometimes I will do triplet arpeggios over measures 22 and 23, similar to what's done in the introduction, to produce a dramatic musical affect.
Generally speaking, if there is no chord over the note, play it singly. Below is a short sample of the arrangement.
Arrangements will be personalized and printed on 8 1/2 by 11, bright white, 24lb paper.
